The aspect that I love best about this piece is the simple message of the text and the way in which the composer enhances it with his setting. By turns pastoral and profound, this quasi-work song reminds us that our labors of the present are our only assurances of the future we desire.


Planting trees early in spring,
we make a place for birds to sing
in time to come. How do we know?
They are singing here now.
There is no other guarantee
that singing will ever be.
